Registered Nurse PRN - Health Care Centers in Schools

A registered nurse working in the school setting through a hospital provides healthcare services to students, staff, and faculty, ensuring a safe and healthy environment. This role involves assessing and treating minor illnesses and injuries, managing chronic conditions, and collaborating with hospital resources for more complex medical needs. The nurse also educates the school community on health practices and promotes wellness initiatives.

Responsibilities

1. Major Roles
   1. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care to students with acute illness and injuries within Health Centers in Schools nursing guidelines.
   2. Refer to school resource or hospital emergency room when student's health problems exceed the realm of the RNs expertise.
   3. Orient new team members (as required), precepts student nurses.
   4. Communicate with parent/guardian, support staff and school faculty as necessary concerning the student's health status while maintaining confidentiality.
2.  
   1. Evaluate & update immunization records of each enrolled student.
   2. Provide preventive health education and counsel students, families and school staff on issues related to the child's health.
   3. Administer medications according to Nursing Protocol and physicians' orders.
   4. Perform hearing and vision screens.
3. Collaboration and Partnership
   1. Initiate and update student's plan of care as requested by Pupil Appraisal Services or Exceptional Student Services within established guidelines.
4. Other duties
   1. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience, Education, Training, Special Skills, and Licensure:

• Experience/Education: Graduate from Accredited RN Program
• Skills: Able to work with a wide range of professional & non-professional staff while maintaining flexibility & a positive attitude.
• Licensure: Current, unrestricted Louisiana State license as RN CPR Certified
